Trimethoprim is typically prescribed for:
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Often the first-line treatment for uncomplicated cases.
Prophylaxis: Long-term, low-dose use to prevent recurrent UTIs.
Middle Ear Infections (Otitis Media): Occasionally used in pediatric patients.
Respiratory Infections: Sometimes used for acute bronchitis.
Resistance: Many bacteria have developed resistance to trimethoprim, which is why it is often combined with other drugs to increase efficacy.
Folate Levels: Because it interferes with folate metabolism, it is usually avoided during pregnancy (especially the first trimester) to prevent neural tube defects.
Side Effects: Common reactions include rashes, itching, and upset stomach. In rare cases, it can affect blood cell counts (like anemia or leukopenia) by depressing bone marrow function.
Note: This medication only treats bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections like the flu or the common cold.
