Sucralfate (often known by the brand name Carafate) is a prescription medication used to treat and prevent gastrointestinal ulcers. It works as a mucosal protectant by chemically reacting with stomach acid to form a thick, paste-like barrier that coats and shields ulcers, allowing them to heal.

• Timing: For maximum effectiveness, take it on an empty stomachat least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

• Dosage: Typically prescribed as 1 gram taken 4 times a day, often before meals and at bedtime, or as directed by your healthcare provider.

•  Medication Spacing: Because it creates a physical coating in the stomach, sucralfate can interfere with the body's ability to absorb. Take all other oral medications at least 2 hours before or after sucralfate.
